Caring for the Land

With the help of many volunteers we planted and continue to care for 3000+ trees. The seedlings were purchased from various conservation organizations: Kenosha, Racine and Walworth Counties as well as the Wisconsin Department of Nature Resources. All the trees receive tender-loving care.

We did it like they did it 100 years ago. The seedlings were soaked in buckets and then planted by hand.  Weeds are pulled and wood chips are delivered by wheelbarrow and spread with a pitch fork.  The wood chips are from the recycling center. Our survival rate with hand-planting and chipping is just as good if not better than mechanized management practices.

Caring for the Animals

We take in horses, ponies, cats, kittens and dogs. Some we help find good homes with other families; some we are able to keep. When animals have health issues we try the standard course of treatments and then we get creative.

Our Appaloosa gelding, Eclipse, has ERU (Equine Recurrent Uveitis) which causes blindness. We gave him prescription eye drops twice a day and a fly mask (in summer). This treatment helped somewhat but daily feeding of fresh Pineapple cleared up all the outward symptoms. He is a very happy boy and we couldn't have a more loyal friend. Note: Eclipse is the horse with the white star.

Friendship, Knowledge, Understanding, and Wisdom

Wisdom is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her.  Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor.  Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her, and those who hold her fast are called happy.

Good people are like trees with deep roots. They are like trees growing beside a stream, trees that produce fruit in season and always have leaves.  These people succeed in everything they do. They will stay healthy and fruitful even when they are old.
